Director’s Message

Welcome to the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences.  The School of Medicine has 28 departments that are regularly visited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) that ensures that our curriculum is competitive and relevant to equip a health care professional with the right knowledge and skills.

Our undergraduate curriculum is aligned to the Vision, Mission and Motto of the University and undergoes regular review to ensure that it meets with the guiding principles of the HPCSA and Council for Higher Education. One of the key guiding principles of the HPCSA is to ensure that our curriculum is designed to respond to the health and social needs of the citizens of our country.

In order to meet with this guiding principle, it has become incumbent on us to ensure that:

  • Our young, elderly, and people living with disabilities have access to health, social and psychological services.
  • We develop partnerships with the appropriate stakeholders to provide infrastructural development in our immediate and rural areas to provide healthy living conditions.
  • Our research projects focus on both innovative health interventions and outcomes that will meet with societal needs in general.

With the evolution of the digital age, our teaching and learning innovations have developed, providing learners the opportunity for independent learning.  Our state-of-the-art Skills Centre ensures that learners are skilled in many interventions before they are exposed to patients.  Learners also now have contact with patients very early in their career in order to hone their skills in good clinical practice and a holistic approach to patient care.
