Brave class of 1976 remembered on Youth Day Staff members at the Medunsa Campus celebrated the 36 year anniversary
of June 16, also known as The Soweto Uprising, to commemorate
the youth of 1976. They marched from Medunsa Clinical Research
Unit (MeCRU) offices, clad in their old school uniforms, to main
campus gate, chanting struggle songs. Lindi Mabone, Pharmacy Senior
Lecturer, shared her feelings regarding Youth Day. She was one
of the estimated 20 000 students from numerous schools that
participated in the Soweto protest against Bantu education,
during which she lost her close friend. According to Ms Mary Tsele,
although the Class of ’76 has fought during apartheid era to pave the
brighter future for the freedom of education, nowadays students face
another challenge of fighting against the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and
drug abuse.
During their march, Staff members attracted on-looking students and
passer-by motorists who were amused by these actions. Date created: 2012-06-21 13:04:40
