TGSL strengthens leadership pipeline as it welcomes 2026 postgraduate cohort

The University of Limpopo’s Turfloop Graduate School of Leadership (TGSL), a leading centre for postgraduate training of professionals in the public sector, private industry, and municipalities, has officially welcomed its 2026 cohort

The orientation marked the beginning of an intensive academic and leadership journey for these future leaders in business, development, and public administration.

Situated at the Edupark, opposite the iconic Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, TGSL has established itself as a centre for advanced management and development education in Limpopo and beyond. Since its establishment in 1996, the school has earned a strong reputation for producing skilled leaders who significantly contribute to economic growth, public service delivery, and organisational excellence across various sectors.

This year, TGSL has enrolled 69 students across its flagship programmes: the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Development in Planning and Management (MDPM), and Master of Public Administration and Management (MPAM). These programmes are designed to blend academic rigour with practical relevance, supported by close supervision, high-quality teaching, research, and community engagement.

Professor Sipho Mokoena, Director of TGSL stated that the orientation served to introduce students to the academic environment, expectations, and support systems that define the school’s approach to leadership development.

“This induction is about more than administration; it sets the tone for the kind of leaders we aspire to produce. Our goal is to develop ethical, competent, and socially conscious professionals who will drive change in their organisations and communities,” he explained.

Among the new students is Precious Magale, a Medical Content Specialist at Inizio Medical, who has enrolled in the MBA programme for the 2026 academic year to strengthen her leadership and management skills. Aspiring to transition into account management, she believes the MBA will equip her with strong financial, managerial, and strategic competencies.
“My goal is to contribute to leadership capacity within multinational companies operating in South Africa, and I believe that pursuing an MBA is essential for achieving this,” she said.

Cathrine Chueu, Acting Deputy Director: Organisational Design and Job Evaluation at the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, has enrolled for MPAM.

Cathrine Chueu, Acting Deputy Director: Organisational Design and Job Evaluation at the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, is pursuing the MPAM degree. With over 15 years of experience as an Organisational Development Practitioner, she has developed a strong interest in improving organisational effectiveness, governance, and public service delivery.

“The MPAM degree will strengthen my leadership, policy analysis, and management skills, enabling me to drive organisational efficiency and contribute more effectively to improved service delivery in the public sector,” she said.

New TGSL students enrolled in the MBA, MDPM, and MPAM programmes are eager to acquire skills that will empower them and enhance their career prospects.

The University of Limpopo (UL) is well prepared for the 2026 academic year, as affirmed by Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the Deputy Minister of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), during her recent oversight visit to the institution

This visit was part of a national initiative by the department to assess institutional readiness for the upcoming academic year and monitor infrastructure development across the higher education sector. At UL, the Deputy Minister received updates on registration progress, academic preparedness, student support systems, and the construction of additional student residences aimed at expanding accommodation access.

“We conducted an oversight visit to the University of Limpopo to evaluate its readiness for the 2026 academic year and to review the construction of new student residences on campus,” stated Dr Dube-Ncube.

She emphasised the institution’s dedication to inclusive education, particularly after visiting the Reakgona Disability Centre (RDC). “We concluded our oversight at RDC, where the university’s commitment to inclusive education is evident, because the university provides alternative formats of course materials, such as magnified text and braille,” she said.

Dr Dube-Ncube urged the university to focus more on specialisation in strategic fields such as mining and engineering, as this would boost graduate employability and align programmes with the needs of both the provincial and national economies.

“The institution needs to strengthen the integration of technology into its academic programmes to ensure they remain relevant in today’s digital landscape and responsive to future skills demands,” she said, highlighting the significance of programmes that support economic development.

Dr Dube-Ncube reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to collaborating closely with the university and its students. “The University of Limpopo is among institutions with strong potential and capability for innovation,” she remarked.

Dr Jeffrey Mabelebele, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UL, described the university as a liberation and heritage institution, grounded in a rich history of promoting access, equity, and social justice. He highlighted UL’s ongoing transformation agenda and its commitment to producing socially conscious and skilled graduates ready to contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.

“We are focused on empowering our students with relevant knowledge, critical thinking skills, and practical experience that will enable them to succeed in the workforce and become agents of positive change in their communities,” Dr Mabelebele stated.

Prof Kwena Masha, UL Registrar, confirmed that the university is fully prepared for the 2026 academic programme. Registration for returning and first-time entering students was progressing on schedule, with teaching activities already underway for returning students and set to begin for first-time entering students on 9 February 2026.

“All outstanding matters regarding academic exclusions and financial clearance are being addressed. The university remains on track to meet its enrolment targets, and management is working closely with the Student Representative Council to ensure a seamless and efficient registration process for all students,” Prof Masha said.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of key facilities, including the newly constructed university Library, the Earth Sciences Building, the Reakgona Disability Centre, and the construction site for a 4,500-bed student residence. This tour showcased the university’s ongoing investment in infrastructure and its commitment to providing inclusive, high-quality higher education.

The University of Limpopo (UL) officially welcomed its new cohort of first-year students during a face-to-face orientation aimed at introducing them to the facilities and support services that will aid their academic success

With a target of 5,100 first-year students reached, the orientation focused on connecting students with centres of excellence, academic departments, and essential support services throughout the university.

Acting Dean of Students, Melusi Nxumalo, highlighted the importance of knowing where to seek help and encouraged students to utilise the university’s support services when facing challenges.

“This orientation ensures that students know where to go when difficulties arise. Do not suffer in silence. If you encounter financial issues, reach out to the Financial Aid Office. For security concerns, contact the Security Department. For counselling, visit the Centre for Student Counselling and Development, and don’t forget our health centre for medical needs. When times are tough, seek assistance from these departments. We are here for you,” he said.

Dr Jeffrey Mabelebele, Vice-Chancellor and Principal at UL, addresses first-year students, reminding them that admission is only the first step and urging them to work hard, remain resilient, and utilise the University’s academic and psychosocial support to complete their qualifications on time.

In his address, Dr Jeffrey Mabelebele, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UL, reminded students that gaining admission to the university is just the beginning of their journey to success.

“Remember, the path to greatness is paved with hard work, resilience, and perseverance. As you embark on this journey, rest assured that the university is dedicated to providing the academic and psychosocial support you need to complete your qualification on time,” he stated.

He also emphasised that such support would be effective only if students are willing to put in the effort.
“Attend all your classes, manage your time wisely, and make the most of your newfound independence. The responsibility is yours.”

Professor Richard Madadzhe, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, encouraged students to stay focused on their goals. “Your background should not define your future. Where there is a will, there is a way.”

The executive deans reinforced themes of responsibility, discipline, and effective use of university resources.

Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Mamare Bopape, assured students that a strong support system is in place.
“The university has assembled a dedicated team of academics, administrators, and support staff to ensure your success. Do not hesitate to ask questions. With commitment and determination, you will thrive,” she said.

Professor Satsope Maoto, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, cautioned students against misusing their independence.

“Freedom should not be taken for granted. Our academics are supportive, but your success will come from your hard work.”

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management and Law, Professor Omphemetse Sibanda, urged students to invest in their education.
“You cannot expect to achieve without investing effort into your studies. Channel your energy towards your academic goals.”

Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, Professor Leseilane Mampuru, encouraged students to approach their studies with confidence.
“Our programmes are taught by highly qualified academics and aligned with industry needs. We are here to support you, so feel free to reach out whenever you need guidance. Stay focused.”

SRC President Comfort Komane encouraged students to view the university as a platform for growth and transformation.

“You are not here to remain the same. You are here to change your circumstances, improve yourself, and leave behind all negativity.”

Mahlatse Keketso, a first-year BSc (Physical and Mineral Sciences) student, expressed her enthusiasm for beginning her academic journey at UL, describing the campus as vibrant and welcoming.
“Clement Maosa’s address was precise, relatable, and enjoyable. I also appreciate the educational message conveyed by the performing arts students in their play; it was educational,” she said.

Bafana Siphuma, a first-year Bachelor of Pharmacy student, reflected on the importance of discipline and focus.
“University life requires dedication and the right choices to succeed, and that is exactly what I intend to do,” he stated.

For many young people, receiving an acceptance letter from a university signifies not just an academic milestone, but a life-changing opportunity

After competing against thousands of applicants, first-year students are arriving at the University of Limpopo (UL) filled with gratitude, determination, and hope for the future.

Several new students shared their experiences with Inside UL, revealing that the transition from high school to university is a blend of excitement and uncertainty. This journey brings new freedoms, and responsibilities, along with the challenge of adapting to an unfamiliar environment. Here is how some first-year students feel about joining the UL community and their plans to make the most of this opportunity.

Fundiswa Ngcobo, BSC (Medical Sciences)

For Fundiswa Ngcobo, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences student from Kwazulu Natal, gaining admission to UL was a proud moment. She expressed that the experience has already fostered new friendships and a supportive environment.

“I was thrilled to meet new people and begin this new chapter, and I plan to use this study opportunity to improve my life and that of my community,” she said.

Nonkuleleko Tshabalala, BA (Psychology)

Nonkuleleko Tshabalala from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, described a mix of excitement and nervousness.
“Initially, I felt anxious about being independent and far from my parents,” she admitted.

However, she noted that the welcoming atmosphere on campus, particularly at the Sport and Recreation Centre, has helped her feel at home. She values the cultural and linguistic diversity on campus and is eager to learn from others.

Paballo Mashiane, Bachelor of Administration

Paballo Mashiane, a first-year Bachelor of Administration student from Mokopane, found the first few days overwhelming.

“At first, I felt bored because I didn’t know anyone, and there were so many people around campus,” he said. Nonetheless, he soon began to adjust as he met fellow students and grew more comfortable in his new surroundings.

Thapelo Mokoena, a first-year Bachelor of Life Sciences ECP student from Mpumalanga, describes the campus environment as friendly and social.

“It is very social here. People are always ready to engage in conversation,” she said.

Many students admitted that navigating such a large campus posed an initial challenge. “I wish someone had warned me about how often I would get lost,” Mokoena laughed. “The campus is huge.”

Despite these early hurdles, the students feel fortunate to have been accepted into the university and are determined to make the most of their opportunity. They expressed their commitment to focusing on their studies, building supportive friendships, and making responsible choices.

Ngcobo credited the resident assistants for helping first-year students adjust. “They assisted us with settling into campus life, creating student emails, and logging into Blackboard. Their support made things much easier,” she said.

Mokoena, meanwhile, finds solace in the social and recreational spaces. “The sports grounds help me relax and feel more comfortable in this new environment,” she added.

Prof Sithole joins Elim Hospital Board to strengthen healthcare services

Professor Lawrence Sithole, Director of the School of Health Care Sciences at UL, has been appointed to the Elim Hospital Board for a three-year term, which he believes will enhance healthcare services at the facility.

The University of Limpopo (UL) continues to make its mark in the health sector, with recent appointment of Professor Lawrence Sithole, Director of the School of Health Care Sciences, to the Elim Hospital Board in Limpopo

With over two decades of experience in the healthcare industry, Prof Sithole will serve a three-year term. His role will be to act as a vital link between the hospital and the community it serves. His focus will be on strengthening accountability, improving service delivery, and ensuring the institution meets the needs of its patients.

“As a board member, I will facilitate community feedback to ensure healthcare services align with local needs,” he stated. “I will also contribute to the review and development of strategic business plans that align with provincial and national health priorities.”

His responsibilities will also include overseeing the hospital’s financial sustainability.
“My role will involve reviewing management reports and ensuring that effective internal controls for expenditure are in place.”

In addition, Prof Sithole will provide strategic guidance on organisational matters, including human resources and infrastructure maintenance, to support the hospital’s long-term growth and stability.

Expressing his appreciation for the appointment, Prof Sithole said it reflects the value of dedication and professional excellence.
“I feel very excited about this appointment. It shows that recognition comes from the quality of one’s work. My journey has been driven by hard work and commitment to the communities we serve.”

This appointment adds to his growing list of professional leadership roles. In 2025, he was reappointed to the Professional Board for Optometry and Dispensing Opticians.

Prof Sithole believes such appointments demonstrate the calibre of academics at UL.
“It shows that academics at UL are comparable to those anywhere in the country and beyond. When given an opportunity to flourish, the sky is the limit,” he said.

Top achiever Mpho Ntjakata chooses Law degree at UL

Mpho Ntjakata, a first-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) student at the University of Limpopo (UL), has distinguished herself as one of the country’s top achievers among learners with special educational needs

From Mokopane in Limpopo, Ntjakata’s journey to university reflects hard work and perseverance. Living with albinism, she has faced challenges related to her eyesight throughout her education. She attended Setotolwane Elsen Secondary School, a boarding institution dedicated to learners with special educational needs.

In the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, she ranked second nationally and first in Limpopo in the Special Educational Needs achiever’s category, positioning her among the top-performing learners in this group.

Now at UL, Ntjakata is eager to embark on her studies. She chose to pursue an LLB because she enjoys rigorous academic challenges. “I chose LLB because I am intrigued by it, and I like challenging things,” she stated.

Her decision to study at UL was influenced by the support available for students with disabilities. Ntjakata appreciates the inclusive environment and the resources offered through the Reakgona Disability Centre (RDC), which provides learning materials in alternative formats, including magnified text and braille, along with assistive technologies and academic support.

“I selected UL because of its inclusive culture and the support services available for students with disabilities,” she explained.

She believes the university’s approach will help her navigate the challenges often faced by learners with disabilities in mainstream institutions.

“The University accommodates learners with disabilities, regardless of the severity of the impairment. That made me feel confident that I would be supported here,” she said.

Through the Reakgona Disability Centre and other student support services, the university continues to foster accessible learning environments for students with disabilities.

The TIA Pre-Seed Fund is specifically designed to bridge the crucial gap between laboratory discoveries and investment readiness. It supports technologies that have demonstrated proof of principle and show promising commercial potential. Through this fund, the University aims to strengthen the quality and market readiness of innovations emerging from its academic community.

Qualifying applicants stand a chance to receive grant funding of up to R1 million, enabling them to:

Refine and test prototypes

Conduct market validation studies

Strengthen intellectual property (IP) protection

Undertake field studies

Develop a clear roadmap toward commercialisation

Projects supported under this fund may run for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension, ensuring focused development toward a viable, fundable, and competitive innovation.

Who May Apply?
This funding call is open to academic staff, postgraduate students, university-based researchers and innovators who possess protectable intellectual property and are ready to advance their technologies from conceptual or proof-of-principle stages toward credible commercial opportunities. Applicants should have innovations with clear potential for market impact and be prepared to undertake activities that strengthen the technical, commercial and intellectual property readiness of their projects.

Successful applicants are expected to produce tangible outputs such as functional prototypes, IP strategy documents, market validation results, and a defined commercialisation pathway.

The University of Limpopo’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is pleased to invite all students to participate in the World Intellectual Property (IP) Day 2026 Youth Video Competition. This year’s global theme, “Game Changers: IP Powering Sports Innovation,” calls on young innovators to explore the exciting intersection between intellectual property and the world of sport.

This dynamic competition provides a platform for students to creatively showcase how IP drives innovation within the sports sector. Whether through advancements in technology, equipment design, branding, broadcasting, performance analytics, or sport-related entrepreneurship, participants are encouraged to demonstrate how intellectual property protection empowers creators, enhances competitiveness, and transforms the sports industry.

How to Participate
