Message from the Executive Dean: Prof TM Mothiba
Through its offerings in the Schools of Medicine and Health Care Sciences, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) supports academic endeavours that seek to strengthen the advancement of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) as an important national imperative. Interestingly, this is directly related to one of the University's mission-specific support goals, which is to strengthen and maintain close collaboration with commerce, industry, government and local governments, and professions in producing suitably qualified and well-equipped career-oriented graduates. In this context, and in the midst of a widespread COVID-19 pandemic, the two schools have inherently adapted their training and expanded their solution-driven academic offerings in order to support World Health Organization calls for the betterment of lives, particularly in developing countries such as South Africa. As a result, the FHS continues to support SET recognition through a variety of engagements, including but not limited to participation in research niche areas and collaborative medical sciences research.
Given the challenging context of providing health promotion-oriented education across all disciplines, as well as concomitant community engagement and research, the FHS has begun to develop strategic outcomes that stem from the university's strategic goals and objectives. Through these strategic outcomes, the Faculty will continue to be a proactive and responsive entity that contributes enormously to the emancipation and eradication of unwarranted causes of morbidity and mortality among the populations that the Faculty's products serve, by producing competent graduates through infallible tutelage. This will be done with careful consideration for the competency outcomes that various statutory bodies that guard and control some of the Faculty's disciplines would like to see enforced. As a result, constant care is taken to ensure that all of these disciplines maintain their accreditation status by meeting the requirements of the competency outcomes established by these bodies. Prof TM Mothiba, the Faculty's Executive Dean, is at the forefront of providing strategic leadership to realise the Faculty's aspirations.
