Launch of the Limpopo TVWS pilot project

The University of Limpopo, South Africa, in collaboration with Microsoft South Africa, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Multisource and several governmental and non-governmental stakeholders are preparing to officially launch a Television White Spaces (TVWS) pilot project on 18 June 2014 at its Turfloop campus. The pilot project is established for purposes of experimenting on the viability of providing broadband wireless internet connectivity at five selected high schools around the campus. All the selected schools are approximately within a 10km radius from the Turfloop campus. The pilot project focuses on the schools which are located in rural setting.

Currently UL-Turfloop Campus is connected to the South African National Research Network (SANReN) through an optic fiber and microwave link. The SANReN is a CSIR project aimed at creating a new national research and education network in South Africa. The SANReN link will provide the backhaul to the TVWS trial network and access to the internet.
