University of Limpopo (UL) was established as a result of the merger between the former University of the North and the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) on January 1st 2005. Historically, the University of the North was established in 1959 under the apartheid regime´s separate ethnically-based institutions of higher learning policy. MEDUNSA was established in 1976 to provide tertiary education and training facilities to the educationally disadvantaged fields of Medicine, Allied Health and Nursing Sciences, and Dentistry intended to meet the health needs of the country. The merger led to the configuration of the academic structures, establishment of single governance and management structures. These configurations resulted in the University establishing four Faculties, namely, Health Sciences, Humanities, Management and Law as well as Science and Agriculture. The University has boasted an average of 22,000 student population since this transformative process. Though the University has previously operated under the Standard Institutional Statute, its own statute was promulgated by the Higher Education and Training Minister on 23 August 2010. Following nine years of the merger, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, on 26 May 2011, raised an intention to separate the MEDUNSA Campus from the competency of the University of Limpopo. As of 1 January 2015, UL became a standalone institution following the completion of the unbundling process with the MEDUNSA Campus which has now been incorporated into a new university, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. The decision to unbundle the MEDUNSA Campus from UL is an attempt to increase the number of higher education and training institutions in the country. The UL Campus is situated to the north-west of Pretoria in Mankweng about 30km east of Polokwane. Its grounds extend over some 350 ha adjoining the Ga-Rankuwa Township and are easily accessible by roads and rail.
