Recognising the invaluable contributions of Prof Mahlo Mokgalong, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Limpopo (UL), the University of Limpopo Staff Sports Association (ULSSA) has officially named the annual staff sports tournament after him
Prof Mokgalong, who has been a dedicated advocate for the recreational and wellness needs of UL staff members, was honoured through the conception of the Professor Mahlo Mokgalong Annual Staff Sports Games. While the tournament was launched last year, it was only this year that it was named in his honour.
The 2024 edition of the tournament, featuring around 12 organisations, was held at the Oscar Mpetha Sports Complex. The event brought together participants from various universities as well as private and public sectors to compete in a wide range of sporting activities, including Football, Netball, Volleyball, Super Pool, Golf, Tennis, Darts, Chess, Aerobics, a Fun Walk, and a Marathon..
Prof Mokgalong has been a steadfast supporter of ULSSA since its establishment in 2006, recognising the critical impact a healthy workforce has on productivity and the overall work environment. His unwavering commitment to promoting the well-being of both staff and students underscores his visionary leadership and dedication to fostering a thriving academic community. “It is only fitting that we honour him now, while he can still appreciate the recognition,” said ULSSA Chairperson, Victor Makgobela.
Former ULSSA Chairperson, Maria Mochechela, echoed similar sentiments, describing Prof Mokgalong as a pillar of strength for the association. “He has always been there for us, providing not only financial support but also ideas and guidance. It is befitting that we honour him when he is still able to actively appreciate the praises,” Mochechela remarked.
Sonica Fitz, Acting Director of Sports Administration and Recreation, highlighted the importance of participation in the tournament. “The more students we can get to participate in sports, the more staff we can engage. The whole point of the day is for everyone to be active, contributing to a healthy campus,” Fitz explained.
Participants from institutions such as Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), the University of South Africa (Unisa), Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), and the National Department of Correctional Services praised the event’s organisation and the spirit of camaraderie.
Molatelo Mohale, a horticulturist and netball player from Sefako Makgatho, noted, “Overall, the tournament was excellent. The cleanliness, the service, the umpires—everything was top-notch. We had so much fun, and there were no conflicts at all.”
The winners of the tournament included the South African Police Services, who took first place in soccer. UL claimed victories in Netball, Darts, Volleyball, Chess, and Aerobics, while Mankweng Hospital was crowned champion in Tennis, and SMU took the top spot in Supa Pool.
Prof Mokgalong, expressed his deep sense of honour and felt humbled by the recognition bestowed upon him through the naming of this annual event. “This gesture has touched me profoundly, and I am immensely grateful to the ULSSA and everyone who has been part of organising this terrific event.”
He added that he has always believed that the well-being of staff and students is the cornerstone of a thriving academic community. “The energy, camaraderie, and dedication I have witnessed during these sports games are a testament to the spirit of unity and resilience that defines UL. It is this very spirit that has driven me to support initiatives like the ULSSA, which not only promote physical health but foster a sense of belonging and community among us all.”
