Veteran athlete Anna Maponya, attached to the University of Limpopo (UL) Athletics Club and a proud member of the Mankweng community, continues to bring glory to both the University and her village through her remarkable achievements in athletics

Most recently, the energetic veteran secured first place, scooping a gold medal, in the 4-kilometre Athletics South Africa (ASA) Cross-Country Championships 2024,  held in Cape Town. Competing in the 50+ age category, Maponya completed the race in an impressive 15 minutes and 12 seconds, adding yet another accolade to her growing list of accomplishments.

With less than a decade in professional athletics, Maponya trains at UL’s state-of-the-art sports facilities as a dedicated member of the UL Athletics Club. She has consistently shown that age is no obstacle to success. Reflecting on her journey, Maponya attributed her achievements to her passion for athletics and the University’s support for community development. “The University’s commitment to improving the community has allowed me to push my own boundaries and inspire other women my age who may be thinking sports is only for the young,” she shared.

At 53 years old, and a resident of Makanye near UL, Maponya is no stranger to victory. In of June this year, she claimed a prestigious Bill Rowan medal, securing gold and first position in the 50+ women’s category during the annual Comrades Marathon. Looking back on her recent win, Maponya said, “I’m proud to have added another gold to my collection. As I continue to raise the University’s flag high, I remain grateful for the training opportunities they provide.”

Ludwick Mamabolo, UL’s athletics coach and a celebrated Comrades Marathon winner, expressed optimism about Maponya’s future, stating, “Anna may be selected to represent South Africa internationally next year, depending on her age category. Her next challenge is the Masingita race in Giyani, and I am confident she will excel once again.”

Maponya’s unwavering dedication continues to inspire, demonstrating that with passion and perseverance, there are no limits to what can be achieved, regardless of age.
