The Department of Geology and Mining at the University of Limpopo, under the School of Physical and Mineral Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, proudly presents the “Introduction to Mining” Short Learning Programme (SLP). This course is designed to equip professionals in the mining sector with foundational knowledge, ensuring alignment with industry demands and best practices.

Purpose of the Programme

The “Introduction to Mining” SLP provides essential knowledge and skills in geology and mining, enabling participants to:

  • Master foundational concepts and industry practices.
  • Understand mineral exploration methods and mining processes.
  • Address environmental considerations in mining.
  • Contribute effectively to the mining sector’s growth and sustainability.

This initiative supports industry modernization and aligns with global goals, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

  • Target Audience:
    • Technical Staff (Geologists, Mining Engineers, Environmental Scientists, Metallurgists).
    • Supervisory and Management Personnel (Mine Managers, Project Managers, Operations Supervisors).
    • Consultants and Analysts.

  • Admission Requirements:
    • Minimum of NQF Level 4 (Matric).
    • Current employment in the mining industry or related sectors.
    • Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) for applicants without formal qualifications.
  • Delivery Mode:
    • Blended Learning: Combines contact classes and online support.
    • Duration: Two weeks (Monday to Friday).
    • Assessment: Formative assessments (60%) and summative assessments (40%).
