FACULTY OF HUMANITIES
School of Education
Our former Chancellor, Nelson Mandela, said, “It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor”
Education is one of the core academic fields supporting the African Renaissance. We need a well-educated populace to ensure that our country continues to develop and provide everyone with a better standard of living.
Since 1994, enormous changes in educational policies, as well as practices, have occurred. These changes attempt to provide South Africa with a responsive and relevant education system. The School of Education is deeply committed to this ambitious Education Project and sets out “to make a difference.”
The School of Education is one of three Schools in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo’s Turfloop Campus. Its vision is ‘to be a leading African Centre of excellence that produces highly skilled and competent educators of international standard in a rural setting‘. The School is primarily committed to rural regeneration, empowerment, and development through a lifelong learning approach to learning and interdisciplinary research in a caring environment. The vision and mission of the School stem from the rural reality of the Province of Limpopo, where the University and the School are situated. From where it is located, the School of Education serves the whole of South Africa, particularly the two rural provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Through our programmes, and primarily through Teaching Practice, we want our students to engage this rural reality creatively and critically.
Our students must become masters rather than slaves of this rural reality. The diagram below gives a pictorial representation of the vision of the School and the egg metaphor. In particular, it highlights the transformational context within which the four pillars of our vision interact.
The School is committed to a core set of values reflected in a culture that promotes the development of personal and professional integrity and engagement for the benefit of our society.
