Student Structures

The School does not solely focus on offering theoretical knowledge to the students during the course of their studies. Students in the School engage in parallel activities meant to boost their knowledge and experiential learning in their various fields.

  • The Performing Arts students organise and perform in an annual Heritage Arts and Cultural Festival during September, which attracts over 10 000 community members.
  • The Students’ Council organise an annual educational trip for Media and Communication Studies students to major public relations and media organisations.
  • The University of Limpopo Information Studies students (ULISS) engage in field trips to various library and information services centres in other provinces.
  • The University of Limpopo (UL) debating society which is based in the School conducts visits to other universities to engage with students.
  • The Contemporary English Language Studies and Multilingual Studies programme has established a comprehensive book club, while the English Studies programme runs an English Society.
  • The Translations and Linguistics programme has a brand new Language Laboratory to facilitate translation and interpreting practice.
  • The National Department of Arts and Culture offers tuition bursaries to BA (Translation and Linguistics) students.
  • Media Studies Honours students direct and produce a number of short films.
Research

The School has dedicated staff members who publish articles regularly in accredited
journals. What is also pleasing is that the School produces a good number of master’s and doctoral graduates on a yearly basis.

Advisory committee

The School has several advisory committees, namely:

Management Committee
Teaching and Learning Committee
Research Committee
Community Engagement Committee
Recruitment Committee
Selection Committee

Social Responsibility

The School of Languages and Communication Studies always strives to render the highest quality of community engagement possible since it regards community engagement as one of the three pillars on which a university functions. These three pillars are teaching, research and community engagement. The School is fully aware of its obligation in this regard seeing that it belongs to the University of Limpopo which is undoubtedly a core university in the Limpopo Province, one of the most disadvantaged provinces in South Africa. Some of the community engagement activities that Langcom staff members are and have been involved in can be listed as follows:

  • Adjudicators for debating competitions
  • Translation
  • Editing
  • Provision of library services
  • Motivational talks to learners at secondary schools
  • Talk shows on radio and TV
  • Terminology development
  • Provision of language courses
  • HIV and AIDS awareness campaigns
  • Development of language policies
  • Development of orthographies
  • Development of literature
  • External examiners at Matric level and at other universities, and so on
