University of Limpopo hosts continental dialogue on internationalisation, human mobility

The Office of International Affairs at the University of Limpopo (UL), in collaboration with the African Partnerships Universities Alliance (APUA), announces an upcoming webinar entitled “Internationalisation, Human Mobility and Social Cohesion: Building Inclusive African Futures through Knowledge, Cooperation and Shared Responsibility.”

This important event will serve as a platform for African higher-education scholars, university leaders, and stakeholders to come together and critically explore the transformative potential of internationalisation in fostering stronger, interconnected, and inclusive higher education systems across the continent.

The webinar is designed to align with APUA’s broader vision of promoting Africa-centred internationalisation. It aims to enhance institutional capacity, facilitate knowledge exchange, foster intra-African collaboration, and build meaningful partnerships among universities in Africa. By doing so, the initiative seeks to empower African institutions and position them at the forefront of knowledge production and development efforts.

Featured Speakers

Facilitator: Dr. Mojalefa Mankgero, a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Limpopo

Professor Jepkemboi Ruth Choge is set to address critical themes in institutional leadership, governance, inclusion, and mobility within the educational sector. Serving as an Associate Professor of Educational Administration and Leadership, Prof. Choge brings a wealth of expertise in several key areas. Her extensive experience encompasses educational governance, the dynamics of institutional leadership, capacity building in teacher education, and the facilitation of student and faculty mobility. Additionally, she has a strong focus on gender mainstreaming and the development of inclusive institutional structures. In her contribution, Prof. Choge will delve into the essential leadership and governance capabilities that universities must cultivate to transition from viewing internationalisation as a mere collection of disparate activities to embracing it as a holistic institution-wide initiative that promotes both academic and social integration.

Dr. Keneilwe Molosi-France, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Higher Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Namibia, will take an in-depth look at the complexities of equitable partnerships, the impact of decolonial knowledge, and the importance of lifelong learning and community engagement. Her scholarly work addresses pivotal issues surrounding sustainable development, particularly within indigenous and rural communities. Furthermore, Dr. Molosi-France engages in community-based participatory research and critically examines the structural inequalities that often permeate Global South–North research collaborations. In her session, she will encourage participants to reflect on the notion of genuine reciprocity, specifically questioning what it truly means for universities to enter into partnerships when faced with disparities in resources, authority, and institutional power.

Professor Evelyn Chiyevo Garwe, who holds the position of Associate Dean for Education in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco, will highlight the interplay between quality assurance, decolonial approaches to higher education, the enhancement of African research capacity, and pathways toward sustainable development. With a background that spans across various facets of higher education, including quality assurance, policy formulation, strategic leadership, and the promotion of decolonial education, Prof. Garwe is poised to share valuable insights. Her vast experience also includes academic publishing, grant development, and fostering sustainable research collaborations. In her contribution, she will explore strategies for African universities to maintain a robust global engagement while simultaneously reinforcing African knowledge production, enhancing institutional quality, and promoting development-oriented higher education.

At the heart of this dialogue lies a significant question: How can internationalisation serve as a catalyst for the development of robust, interconnected, and inclusive African higher education systems and societies?

This conversation aims to transcend conventional metrics of internationalisation, such as mobility statistics and partnership agreements. Instead, it will interrogate deeper questions related to African institutional agency, equitable knowledge relationships, inclusivity, social cohesion, decolonial approaches, research capabilities, and pathways toward sustainable development.

Through this collaborative engagement, the University of Limpopo and its APUA partners aspire not only to contribute to the discourse on internationalisation but also to strengthen the capacity of African universities. They aim to position these institutions as proactive agenda-setters, vital knowledge producers, and influential development actors, ultimately shaping a more inclusive and empowered future for higher education in Africa.
