Teaching and Learning Methodology

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies adopts a student-centred and applied approach to teaching and learning that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills and real-world environmental and geographical challenges. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, laboratory and computer-based practicals, fieldwork, case studies, group activities and independent learning.

Technology-enhanced learning is incorporated through the University’s learning management system and relevant digital and geospatial technologies. Students are progressively exposed to disciplinary tools and methods, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, data analysis and other technologies appropriate to their fields of study.

Problem- and inquiry-based learning, case studies and practical activities encourage students to apply knowledge, investigate environmental and societal challenges, evaluate evidence and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and collaborative skills. Where appropriate, teaching and learning draw on local and contemporary examples to connect academic knowledge with environmental and developmental challenges in South Africa and beyond.

Student learning is assessed through a combination of formative and summative assessment methods aligned with module and programme learning outcomes. The Department promotes continuous improvement in teaching and learning through student feedback, peer engagement, reflective teaching practice, curriculum review and the ongoing evaluation of student performance.
